This is the largest museum of Bashkortostan. It was founded in 1919. It is located in an old comfortable mansion. The basis of the museum’s collection was the famous collection of paintings by Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov. He gave the city where he was born and spent his childhood, his collection of 102 pictures: 30 own works and 72 paintings of Russian artists of the 2nd half of the nineteenth century. Altogether there are more than 8,5 thousand of Russian, Bashkir and Western European art of XVI–XX centuries in the Museum’s collection. The earliest – crosses, small icons, coins, created by Russian craftsmen of casting and chasing. The museum has collection of about 200 Old Russian icons, among them there are fine specimens of the Moscow, Novgorod and Northern schools. Nineteenth century is represented by the works of V. Tropinin, O. Kiprensky, A. Orlovskiy, S. Shchedrin and magnificent large canvases of Ivan Aivazovsky «Night in Venice» and «Morning in the Bay of Naples». The turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is presented by the works of M. Nesterov – «Vision to the young Bartholomew», «Early Spring», «Belaya River», V. Serov, N. Rerich, P. Konchalovsky and D. Burliuk, the «father of Russian Futurism», poet and artist. There are 37 paintings in Ufa collection, the most extensive in Russia.In the museum there are paintings of Western European masters of the XVI–XIX centuries: Italian artists Canaletto, Pannini, French – Lancret, Jerar, Vernet, Dutch – Bakhuyzen, Berhem; engravings of Durer, Piranesi, Bartolozzi, Robinson, and Strange.
Section of art of Bashkortostan occupies more than half of the entire collection. There are works by K. Devletkildeev, A. Tyulkin, A. Lutfullin, B. Domashnikov, A. Burzyantsev, A. Sitdikova, sculptures by T. Nechaeva, Z. Basyirov. The collection is being replenished by works of S. Krasnov, Z. Gayanov, N. Latfullin, V. Kuznetsova and others.
