It is the biggest equestrian statue in the country, its height is 9,8 meters, weight – 40 tons, the height of the pedestal – 10 meters. The authors of the memorial are the sculptor S.D. Tavasiev, the architect I.G. Gainutdinov. It was opened in 1967. It is one of the main sightseeing sites of Ufa, which is traditionally the first to be shown to the guests. The memorial can be seen when coming to the city on any kind of transport – on a car, train or from the river. The great hero of Bashkir people Salavat Yulayev (1754–1800) reined his restive horse in on the steep bank of the Belaya River. He showed the military and the organizational talent in the Peasants’ War in 1773–1775. There were Bashkir, Russian, Tatar, Chuvash, Mari and other soldiers in his army. Salavat Yulayev was not only a warrior, he was also a poet. In November of 1774 he was captured, tortured and sent for an eternal penal servitude to the baltic port (now it is Paldiski city, Estonia). In front of the memorial is a big walking alley with benches, a fountain and flowers, there are always many people here and one can meet several weddings on weekends. In 2007, to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Bashkiria voluntary joining Russia, a lot of work has done on developing the surrounding territory. In the place of the former ravine between the memorial and the Congress-Hall a big place is constructed for celebrating Sabantui. It is framed with pedestrian lighted paths.
